Top six stop-hunger foods

10 foods that speed up weight loss

Losing weight is not just about reducing food intake and cutting things out of your diet, there are a few additions that you can make to your daily diet that can indeed help you lose weight. We've found 10 foods stuffs that incorporated with a healthy eating approach can help you shift those extra pounds and speed up weight loss.

Grapefruit

We've all heard of the grapefruit diet but you don't have to live on a diet of grapefruit alone to lose weight. It's been found that that eating half a grapefruit before each meal or drinking a serving of the juice three times a day can help you drop the pounds. The magic ingredient is the fruit's phytochemicals and their effect of reducing insulin levels which stimulates your body to convert calories into energy rather than storing as flabby fat.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a super spice when it comes to boosting your wellbeing as it has many health-giving properties. In terms of weight loss, it's all to do with controlling those post-meal insulin spikes, which is what make you feel hungry. And you don't need to get much of the stuff to get the benefits; studies have shown that just a quarter teaspoon of cinnamon a day can lower the blood sugar, cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. To up your cinnamon intake either sprinkle it on to your breakfast cereal, or maybe mix it into your morning latte.

Chili peppers

Adding a bit of heat to your diet can give you a weight-loss boost. Studies show that having a spicy start to your morning, i.e. eating chilies as a part of your breakfast can make you opt for a smaller lunch. Apparently it's down to capsaicin which is found in chilies and red peppers that has appetite suppressing properties. Granted — chilies aren't the easiest of items to face as your morning meal but how about as a part of a spicy egg-white omelette or stirred into scrambled eggs for a spicy weight loss kick.

Fennel tea

Again fennel tea is a food stuff that boasts a list of health giving benefits; it's packed with good levels of potassium, magnesium and calcium as well as the vitamins B and C. But when it comes to the weight-loss stakes fennel had a double benefit: working both as an appetite suppressant and a metabolism booster which really are both useful if you're trying to lose weight. Fennel tea is widely available in supermarkets so add it to your daily diet to stave off cravings and boost your fuel burn.

Salad

Eating a low-calorie salad before your main meals can help you to lose weight and ensure you get recommended daily intake of veggies. And it's not rocket science as to how it works for weight loss, the key is the sheer volume of a salad, which makes you feel too full to pig out when it comes to your main meal. You need to make sure you don't drown it in a fatty dressing though — a little olive oil and balsamic vinegar makes the perfect healthy accompaniment to a fresh salad.

Green tea

Another powerful brew — green tea really has a multitude of health and wellbeing benefits. And if you are a keen into fitness it makes the perfect pre-workout drink; it's been found to increase endurance by as much as 24 per cent, allowing you to exercise longer and burn more calories. But in terms boosting your weight loss power, a study carried out by the Journal of Nutrition, drinking five cups of green tea per day can help you lose twice as much weight, most of it where we want to lose it most — around the middle.

Celery

Celery rates well as a weight-loss food as you can actually end up burning more calories eating it than your body will take on consuming it. But by no means does that make celery low in nutritional value; it's super-packed with fiber (great for digestion) and foliate (the essential nutrient for the care and production of new cells within the body). Get your celery fix by making sure it's featured in your pre-meal salad, as an accompaniment to your lunch or as a healthy snack when you want to satisfy that 'munch' craving.

Lentils

Lentils are great weight-loss food as they have the power to really satisfy your hunger without packing your body with loads of calories and fat — that's often why lentils feature heavily as a meat substitute — they can make you feel like you've had a meaty dish minus the calories and saturated fat that come with eating meat. Again like celery, lentils are full of fiber and foliate so as well as giving you the full feeling, they are great for digestion and healthy cell growth.

Dark chocolate

Granted chocolate is not low in calories nor in fat, but dark chocolate has two major dietary positives that can lead to long term weight loss. First, it's quite difficult to munch massive quantities of high-quality dark chocolate as compared to the milk stuff. Secondly, dark chocolate is very high in health-promoting antioxidants. In terms of a weapon in your weight-loss armory, you can use dark chocolate as a way to curb any sweet cravings, just a few small squares to quell a full on chocolate binge is well worth the modest calorie intake.

Quinoa

Pronounced 'Keen-wah', quinoa is known as the 'mother grain' by the ancient Peruvians. Quinoa is good for weight loss as it has the power to keep you feeling fuller for longer due to its high protein content. Also the carbs that are present in the grain are released slowly into the body so you won't get that rush of energy after eating quinoa as you would with other foods like white rice or pasta. You can eat quinoa raw but we reckon it's best when it's cooked in a similar way to rice or couscous.

Top 5 flat-belly foods

suchithkc

Dreaming of a flat stomach without hitting the gym? The good news is your dream may not be too far away. Whether you’re hoping to blitz away a muffin top or are battling with bloating, your diet is integral to shaping up this problem area. Start eating your way to a trimmer waistline with these top 5 foods for a flat stomach.

Flax seeds

Flax seeds (often referred to as linseeds) are nutritious seeds packed with monounsaturated fats (MUFAs) - which are actually a lot more diet-friendly than they sound. Monounsaturated fats, unlikesaturated fats (the "bad" fats found in junk food), not only lower cholesterol levels but they can also help to reduce body fat. Liz Vaccariello, author of The Flat Belly Diet, advocates these healthy fats for those wanting to specifically target belly fat.
Not only will these super seeds tackle love handles, but they are great for those suffering from bloating. Flax seeds provide high levels of fiber and can help to keep the digestive system running smoothly, helping to banish bloating, constipation and other digestive problems. Try adding a tablespoon of freshly ground flax seeds to your morning cereal, lunchtime salad, or homemade smoothie to start enjoying their belly-flattening benefits.

Berries

Blackberries, blueberries, acai berries... what do these fruits have in common? They could all help you to squeeze back into your skinny jeans. Studies have suggested that those wanting to lose their belly fat should opt for fruit that is blue or red in colour (such as cherries, red grapes and many types of berries). In fact, it is the chemicals that are responsible for giving these fruits their colour (anthocyanins) that, according to recent research, also burn abdominal fat.

Yoghurt

Not only is yogurt low in fat andcalories, so good as a weight loss food, but many yogurts also contain active cultures (probiotics) which promote the growth of good bacteria in the gut and help with digestion, excess gas and bloating. Yoghurt is luckily easy to fit into any diet plan as part of a meal or a snack between meals. You could also trycombining natural yogurt, berries and flax seeds in a morning smoothie or bowl of cereal, getting you off to a great tummy-trimming start before you even leave the house.

Whole grains

Whole grains are great for weight management and shedding those excess pounds. Not only are they alow-fat source of slow-release energy but, due to their high levels of fiber, they will help to regulate the digestive system and also keep you feeling fuller for longer. Eating whole grains also helps to lower levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) and insulin in the body, both of which encourage fat to be stored around the belly.
Many people, however, instinctively opt for wheat as their primary source of whole grains, which is often not the best choice. Not only is wheat difficult to digest - which can cause bloating in some - but it is better to eat grains in their natural form rather than as a processed flour. Good alternatives to try are brown rice, oats, buckwheat and spelt. Quinoa - although technically a seed - is also a nutritious alternative that can be used in the place of grains such as pasta and couscous.

Water

While it's not technically a food, a lack of water in your diet could be the one thing still standing in your way of a flat stomach. Bloating is something that affects many women and the problem is often worsened - or even instigated - by a lack of fluids in the system. Drinking water will help to flush toxins out of the system, curb hunger, improve the digestive system and reduce fluid retention, all of which will leave your stomach looking flatter.
If you are aiming for a flat belly, it is important to drink a minimum of eight glasses of liquids a day. Although this does not have to be water, it is best to go for liquids that are still (fizzy drinks can cause bloating) and low in calories. If you don't fancy plain water, a good alternative is green tea - which is also rumoured to have fat burning benefits - or fennel, dandelion or peppermint teas, all of which can combat bloating.

Eat breakfast like a Mumbaikar

suchithkc

I like Mumbai in the morning. Not because it is the quietest place on earth and definitely not because I am a morning person. But because 8:30 a.m. has just enough buzz, offering an essence of the city without the overwhelming chaos.

It is also a great time to eat in the city.

Apart from the food being fresher, Mumbai's local breakfast options are an assortment of cultures, inherited from a long and luscious culinary melting pot.

Many local dishes are modern adaptations derived from the Kolis, a fishing community said to be the original inhabitants of Mumbai.

Others are borrowed from our friendly neighbors, like the Gujarati and Udipi foods that are extremely popular amongst Mumbaikars from all backgrounds.

And then there is the plated relic of Mumbai’s Parsi-Irani culinary heritage.

Here are five highly recommended Mumbai breakfasts:

1. Misal

An onion-topped typical Maharashtrian breakfast. Talk about morning breath.

Misal is an extreme dish, both in flavor and texture.

It’s intense tangy taste comes from a spicy curry that is mixed with sprouted and whole lentils and pulses, garnished with a combination of crispy dried peas, chivda (chickpeas flour noodles) and flat rice topped with coriander, lemon, chopped onion and tomato.

Misal is often served with pav (the local bread bun) to balance its sharpness.

This array of spice-coated textures is sure to wake you from a slumberous mood.

Misal is a typical Maharashtrian dish enjoyed across the state, yet carefully customized in every household and restaurant. It is easily found in most Maharashtrian restaurants and teashops in Mumbai.

Average price: Rs 30 per plate.

2. Poha

Poha made of flattened rice is a comparatively light local breakfast.

Compared to most other Maharashtrian breakfast snacks, poha is a relatively light dish made out of flattened, processed rice, roasted with chilies, onions, mustard seeds, cumin seeds and curry leaves and topped with a squeeze of lime. Some poha recipes add sugar to the seasoning as well.

The soft tanginess of the lime gives the otherwise dryly flavored dish just the right kick and moisture to balance it out.

It is quick to prepare and easy to digest.

There is a variety of pohas, from the classic onion to the hearty potato or a fresh and aromatic coconut poha.

Like misal, poha is also found in most Maharashtrian restaurants and teashops. It is the perfect accompaniment to your morning chai and newspaper.

Average price: Rs 20 per plate.

3. Sabudana vada

Sabudana vada is as local Maharashtrian as it gets.

Sabudana is a spongy extract from tropical palm stems found in vast quantities in Maharashtra.

It is a pure carbohydrate with very little nutritional value, but said to be cooling to the system and especially popular as a fasting food.

The most enjoyable sabudana dish is no doubt sabudana vada.

A crunchy snack made from sabudana, potatoes, onions, green chili, cumin powder, ginger and lemon all mixed together, rolled into balls and then fried. The crust of the vada is beautifully crisp while the inside remains soft and chewy.

To get a taste of an authentic sabudana dish one must venture to Shivaji Park, an area in Mumbai named after a 17th-century warrior king. This patriotic neighborhood offers some small, no-frills but genuine Maharashtrian breakfasts.

Average price: Rs 30 per plate

Recommended at Aswad, shop 20, Anand Building, Sheetla Devi Temple Road, Mahim, Shivaji Park; +91 (0)22 2446 3214

4. Upma

Upma, a traditional South Indian breakfast popular in Mumbai.

Upma was originally a South Indian breakfast but it is found all over the country.

The Matunga neighborhood in Mumbai is known for its Udipi eateries and Ram Ashraya is one of its oldest, going back three generations and retaining authentic South Indian recipes.

The upma at Ram Ashraya in Matunga is just divine. A subtly flavored portion of semolina, onions, mustard seeds and curry leaves made in a fair amount of ghee that makes the semolina melt in your mouth like a hot snowflake.

Ram Ashraya is also known for itsneer dosa and seasonal sheeras (a sweet, dense dessert).

Ram Ashraya opens at 5 a.m., earlier than most breakfast joints, and serves idli, upma, sheera, tea and coffee till 7 a.m., after which they open up their full kitchen.

One may well visit in the wee hours of the morning for the perfect upma and a hot tumbler of south Indian coffee.

Average price: Rs 20 per plate

Recommended at Ram Ashraya, Bhandarkar Road, Matunga (Central Railway), Matunga; +91 (0)22 2414 2623, 2414 2369

5. Sali par edu

Sali par edu translates to eggs over chips.

Edu in Parsi means egg. The Parsis are a protein-loving community and as such, are particularly fond of eggs.

They have many delicious egg dishes, akuri (scrambled eggs with spices) being one of the most popular, for good reason. But what tops it off for an indulgent hangover brunch is sali par edu.

The description of Parsi sali is one of those rare moments where the words thin and fried are used in conjunction to create thin fried potato sticks.

This sinful breakfast dish is fried sali further sautéed with onion, ginger, garlic, cumin and chilis and baked with eggs till nice and crisp.

This brilliant heavy breakfast goes wonderfully well with a nice cup of Irani chai.

Average price: Rs 90 per plate

Indian publishers win hefty contracts

suchithkc

Addis Ababa, Jan 4 : Two Indian publishers have beaten off stiff international competition to win Ethiopian government contracts worth $5.9 million to print and distribute textbooks on six subjects, as also teachers' guides, a trend that has been consistent over the past three years.
Repro Printers and Pitambra Books were among 19 international printing companies that responded to an education ministry tender four months ago to print textbooks in six disciplines -- mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, civics, and ethics.
All bidders passed the technical evaluation stage, which included assessing the capacity of the printers and their ability to supply the books with the specified cover page and weight of the paper. Eventually, only the two companies from India were selected for the order for five million textbooks.
Established in 1984, the Mumbai-based Repro Printers recorded revenues of $47.1 million last year. Pitambra Books, established in 2001, is based in Jhansi town in Uttar Pradesh and earned $18 million last year.
The lucrative business of printing school textbooks began in 2009 after the Ethiopian government decided to outsource this to foreign printers due to what education authorities claimed was a lack of capacity among domestic printers.
After securing a grant that could reach as high as $1 billion, the first phase of printing 700,000 copies of four textbooks at a cost of $322.8 million was awarded to Britain's Pearson Education Ltd and India's Star Educational Books.
The project is part of the ministry's General Education Quality Improvement Package (GEQIP) that is supported by a $417 million grant from the World Bank as well as from Britain, Italy and Finland.
The five million textbooks, the majority of them relating to mathematics and civics, that will be printed by the two Indian companies are expected to arrive in June, ministry officials say. The companies are also expected to deliver the textbooks to 31 locations across the Ethiopia.
The textbooks have been developed based on the new curriculum of the education ministry. Some $150 million dollars has been spent on curriculum development, the money being provided by the Ethiopian government and the World Bank.

Ramdev set to take on 'corrupt' political leaders in upcoming state polls

suchithkc

Haridwar, Jan 5 : Yoga Guru Baba Ramdev's social outfit, theBharat Swabhiman Trust, has initiated a training programme for young volunteers from across the nation to campaign against 'corrupt and tainted' political leaders during the upcoming five-state assembly polls.
Ahead of the upcoming state assembly polls, Ramdev and his brigade of dedicated volunteers have stepped up their efforts to make good of their promise and to spread awareness and mobilise the voters on the issue of graft and black money.
Speaking to mediapersons here, Ramdev's close aide Acharya Balkrishna revealed the plans of the Bharat Swabhiman Trust. We are imparting training to volunteers for campaigning in the upcoming assembly polls that are to be held in five states of the country. We want them to ensure that 100 percent voting takes place and people vote for only good, honest and clean candidates," said Balkrishna.
Balkrishna further stressed that their exercise was not in favour of any single political party.
"We are not doing this in favour of any political party. We are doing this in favour of national interest. The Bharat Swabhiman Trust's aim is to ensure that people elect only clean and honest candidates, for national interest," said Balkrishna.
Ramdev shot into political scene after he went on a fast against black money and corruption in June 2011, adding to the woes of an embattled government following the nationwide agitations spearheaded by veteran social activist Anna Hazare.
However, his fast was stopped by Delhi Police, which swooped on the protesters with batons in a pre-dawn raid that triggered a fierce public and political outcry.
Following the police crackdown, Ramdev vowed to campaign against the government in the elections, indicating full support from his followers and volunteers in the 'fight against corruption.'

Singapore PM faces 36 pct pay cut, still world's best paid

suchithkc

SINGAPORE  - Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loongand his ministers will see their pay slashed by about 36 percent as the government responds to public discontent over their high salaries, but Lee will remain the world's best-paid leader.
Singapore pays government members and civil servants generously to attract top talent to the public sector. High salaries have also helped its politicians stay honest in a region where corruption is rife.
Lee earns more than S$3 million a year but will have that reduced to S$2.2 million, a review committee he appointed last year said in recommendations made public on Wednesday.
Lee told local media the government would accept the recommendations.
Despite the pay cut, Lee's salary will still be three times that of Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang, the world's next highest-paid political leader who earns about $550,000 a year.
Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard will get about A$480,000 a year under proposals unveiled recently, while U.S. President Barack Obama earns about $400,000.
The annual salaries of Singapore ministers will start from S$1.1 million, a cut of 37 percent.
"Salaries must be competitive so that people of the right calibre are not deterred from stepping forward to lead the country," the committee said.
The committee to review ministerial pay was set up after parliamentary elections that saw the tiny opposition make historic gains against Lee's People's Action Party, which has ruled Singapore since independence in 1965.
The salary cuts will be backdated to May 21.
CORRUPTION, INEQUALITY
Many Singaporeans have complained about growing income inequality and rising prices for housing, transport and other basics on the island, the main Asian centre for private banking.
The quality of service in the famously efficient city-state has also declined in recent years, as seen by multiple breakdowns in the subway system last month.
Mobile data services provided by government-owned Singapore Telecommunications were disrupted on Tuesday evening and not restored until early on Wednesday.
Singapore scores well in surveys on corruption -- the last scandal involving a minister dates from 1986.
Transparency International ranks the city-state at number 5 globally for clean government out of 183 countries and territories surveyed. Neighbouring Malaysia and Indonesia rank number 60 and 100, respectively.
Some Singaporeans, however, said they would prefer if politicians' pay were linked to average salaries or that of poorer people rather than to the top 1,000 income earners as proposed by the committee.
"A good measure of a country's socio-political advancement is how a government helps the lowest rung of the society," Dawei Yan wrote on the Online Citizen, a socio-political website.
"I still believe the pay structure should be pegged to the lowest 1,000 wage earners in Singapore."
The opposition said linking leaders' salaries to what they could earn in the private sector meant they only focused on the rich.
The Singapore Democratic Party has proposed that ministers earn a multiple of pay levels for the lowest 20 percent of wage earners.
According to data from the Ministry of Manpower, the income of Singaporeans in the bottom fifth was flat or negative in the 10 years to June 2010.

Marijuana affects brain functioning during visual stimuli

suchithkc

Washington, Jan 3 : An Indian origin scientist and his team have found that different ingredients in marijuana appear to affect regions of the brain differently during brain processing functions involving responses to certain visual stimuli and tasks.
Sagnik Bhattacharyya, M.B.B.S., M.D., Ph.D, at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College in London, and colleagues studied 15 healthy men, who were occasional marijuana users, to examine the effects of 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (9-THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) on regional brain function during salience processing, which is how people perceive things around them.
The authors used functional MRI images to study each participant on three occasions after administration of 9-THC, CBD or placebo. Study participants performed a visual oddball task of pressing buttons according to the direction arrows on a screen were pointing, as a measure of attentional salience processing.
"Pairwise comparisons revealed that 9-THC significantly increased the severity of psychotic symptoms compared with placebo and CBD whereas there was no significant difference between theCBD and placebo conditions," the researchers said.
9-THC had a greater effect than placebo on reaction time to non-salient relative to salient stimuli.
This was associated with modulation of both prefrontal and striatal function by 9-THC, augmenting (increasing) activation in the former region and attenuating (weakening) it in the latter.
"Moreover, in the present study, the magnitude of 9-THC's effect on response times to non-salient stimuli was correlated with its effect on activation in the right caudate, the region where the physiological effect of 9-THC was linked to its induction of psychotic symptoms," they wrote.
They concluded that "collectively, these observations suggest that 9-THC may increase the aberrant attribution of salience and induce psychotic symptoms through its effects on the striatum and lateral prefrontal cortex."
When the effects of CBD were contrasted with 9-THC and placebo with respect to the visual task there was a "significant effect" in the left caudate with CBD augmenting (increasing) the response and 9-THC attenuating (weakening) it.
"These effects suggest that CBD may also influence the effect of cannabis use on salience processing - and hence psychotic symptoms - by having an opposite effect, enhancing the appropriate response to salient stimuli," the researchers added.
The findings appeared in the January issue of Archives of General Psychiatry, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Rig Veda to particle physics

suchithkc

New Delhi, Dec. 13: Physicist Vivek Sharma who was born inMuzaffarpur, Bihar, and now leads an international group hunting for the Higgs boson sees the search as an attempt to seek out answers to questions posed in the Rig Veda.
Sharma, who went to a Kendriya Vidyalaya in Pune and pursued master's in physics at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, says he was drawn to experimental particle physics after learning Rig Veda hymns from his mother, a Sanskrit scholar. The ancient text has a hymn on creation that speculates on the origin of the universe and describes a period when "all that existed was void and formless".
"It was a shock, it left an impression in my mind. Thousands of years ago people were contemplating our origins," said Sharma, a professor at the University of California, San Diego, and head of a Higgs search team at CERN, the European research laboratory.
He was still a high school student but began thinking how modern technology might be used to probe creation. The Higgs boson, the subatomic particle that Sharma and his colleagues are looking for, was predicted in the 1960s to explain the origin of mass.
A discovery of the Higgs boson is important for physicists because it is the last missing, or unseen, piece of a bedrock theory of physics called the Standard Model that explains all the forces and particles in nature except gravity.
Sharma moved to the US in 1984, treating higher studies in the US as a route to plunge intoexperimental physics requiring expensive machines ' particle accelerators ' but spent five years at CERN in the early 1990s where he discovered two new subatomic particles, including a cousin of the proton, but five times heavier.
His enthusiasm for experimental physics emerges in his talks ' whether delivered to fellow-physicists or aspiring students. It also appears to temper any emotions that might spring each time particle detectors at CERN spot signals resembling traces of the Higgs boson.
"Experiments will ultimately tell us what is right and what is wrong," he said. In the coming months, Sharma and his colleagues will refine their analyses and combine the data from the two main particle detectors looking for the Higgs boson.
"Our curiosity about our origins doesn't change anybody's life, but there is a satisfaction from understanding such things," Sharma said in a telephone interview ahead of the CERN seminar where scientists presented their latest results from the Higgs search.
"But when we build machines like the Large Hadron Collider (the particle accelerator at CERN where proton-proton collisions are used to search for the Higgs boson), it requires us to invent new technologies that can change people's lives," he said.
The World Wide Web was created at CERN to help physicists move data around between different computers in a seamless fashion. "It's a great example of how something that is good for physicists turned out to be fantastic for the public," Sharma said.
New technologies and ideas that are born in experimental physics laboratories may have implications in information technology and medicine. "Our goals are esoteric, but what sometimes comes out benefits the public," he said.
Sharma, whose routine in recent years has been eight weeks at CERN and 10 to 15 days with his wife and 7-year-old daughter in San Diego, is also keen on drawing more students to physics.
His homepage has a link to a talk he once delivered to prospective students and their parents. "The popular belief that physicists do not make much money is totally false," the link says. "Physics majors make more money than chemistry or bio majors."

Gold plated dosa in Bangalore a huge hit

suchithkc

Bangalore, Jan 4 : A restaurant in Bangalore is witnessing large footfalls, since the debut of their latest delicacy, a gold-plated dosa, which is priced at a whooping Rs. 1,011.
One of the restaurateurs chanced upon the idea of creating these unusual delicacies, when he was surfing on the Internet for strategies to make his eatery stand out among other city's food outlets.
"I wanted to do something in restaurant business, so I thought why can't we do something different, so when I once saw in a television channel that they are using gold foils for pizzas and ice creams, which cost 1000 dollars, thought why can't we get this to Bangalore and use it on something else?" said Chandan Lokesh, owner of the restaurant.
Priced at an exorbitant rate, the dish is roasted crisp with a hint of olive oil and has a filling of mashed potatoes, in addition to the gold foil for the finishing touch.
The restaurant also serves a dosa covered with a silver foil, at an affordable price of Rs. 151.
According to media reports, the marketing strategy by owners has made the gold dosa a huge success.
"I got to know about this through my friends that they sell gold dosa over here and I wanted to try it. After I tried it, I liked it so much that I am eating it for the fourth time and I want others also to come and try here and this is ISO certified dosa, it's really good for the health," said Nagashree, a resident.
The owners have planned to patent the gold dosa in the future.
