HC rejects Delhi Police constable''s plea against his jail term

New Delhi, Mar 14 : Observing that courts should be extra cautious while granting bail to an accused involved in a corruption case, the Delhi High Court has dismissed a Delhi Police constable''s plea for suspension of two-year jail term awarded by a trial court in a bribery case.
Dismissing the application filed by Sukhbir Singh, a Delhi police constable posted in Geeta Colony PS, for suspension of his sentence till the disposal of his appeal in the High Court, Justice Hima Kohli, however, admitted his appeal challenging conviction order for hearing.
"The person caught is not only the first timer, he might have been involved in this type of cases earlier. Hence, the court must show extra caution while suspending sentence in a case of corruption," the court said and directed Singh to surrender forthwith.
The trial court had on January 29, 2011 sentenced Singh to two years jail term and imposed a fine of Rs 6,000 on him for taking bribe of Rs 5000 from a man.
On September 8, 2006, Singh was arrested by the Anti- Corruption Bureau of Delhi Police while taking bribe from a man for not registering an FIR on the basis of a woman''s complaint against him.
