Sadiq Batcha, former telecom minister A Raja's business associate, was found dead at his Chennai home on Wednesday afternoon.
Police sources are telling TV channels he committed suicide, but have made no formal announcement.
The CBI had questioned Batcha in connection with the 2G spectrum scam, and was banking on him to nail Raja. The investigations could be affected by the death of Batcha, but many pursuing the case, such as Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy, belive the evidence is so overwhelming that Raja will be nailed anyway.
Batcha was rushed to Apollo Hospitals in Chennai, but doctors said he was dead by the time he was taken in.
Swamy, a petitioner in the 2G spectrum case, said many reputations were under threat, and "almost everybody who is not at the top is vulnerable to this situation".
He described Batcha as a "hard-boiled character" and suggested that people like him, who could wreck the reputation of people in high places, could even be "persuaded to commit suicide".
Sadiq Batcha was managing director of Green House Promoters, the controversial real estate firm in which Raja's wife was a prime player.
Earlier on Wednesday, the CBI had announced it would charge A Raja, the ousted telecom minister, with forgery and criminal conspiracy. The CBI was investigating whether Batcha’s firm was a front for Raja. Sleuths suspect Batcha could have helped Raja route his 2G slush funds into business.
