New Delhi, Apr 12 : HRD Minister Kapil Sibal today said foreign educational institutions investing in India should not eye for profit, but should make education affordable to all sections of the society.
"We dont want in the field of education profit enterprises to come in to give dividend to their shareholders when our poor people in India have to sell the family silver to get their children educated. It''s a no no," he said.
However, he said, it is not true in case of university system as universities abroad do not think in terms of profit.
He was addressing the valedictory of the ''4th global meet of the Association of Universities'' here.
The Minister''s statement assumes significance in the backdrop of apprehensions raised by some political parties and stakeholders about foreign educational providers seeking to make profit by setting up campuses in India.
The Foreign Educational Institutions (Regulation of Entry and Operations) Bill, which is currently being studied by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on HRD seeks to allow entry of foreign education providers in India.
Apparently indicating that the Bill would not allow private educational institutioons to make profit in India, he said: "I doubt we will get private sector investment (in education sector)".
Underlining the role of International Association of Universities in ensuring free flow of knowledge regardless of boundaries, he sought greater collaboration between countries in the filed of education.
Referring to the keen interest of the Georgia Tech, one of the top research universities, to conduct programmes in India, he said the tie up could see the institute offering their programme on distance mode to the students here and India getting access to knowledge.
