Hyderabad, Apr 6 : A retired magistrate and his wife were found dead under suspicious circumstances at their house in Bandlaguda here today even as their son, a "mentally retarded" person allegedly tried to set on fire the bodies without informing anyone, police said.

The decomposed bodies of Hanumantha Rao (75) and Sarojini (72) were recovered from the compound of their house and according to local residents, the 35-year-old son of the elderly couple Narasingh Rao alias Raju tried to set ablaze the bodies, they said.

Rajendranagar Police who are investigating the case suspected that Hanumantha Rao, who retired as a civil judge of Bhongir court in Nalgonda district, may have committed suicide yesterday by hanging himself following the death of his wife, who died of illness a day earlier.

An investigating officer said, "It seems that the retired magistrate was depressed over the demise of his wife and resorted to the extreme step and hanged himself." However, locals alleged that Narasingh Rao, the couple''s "mentally retarded" son might have killed his parents two days ago and that they noticed him trying to set fire to the bodies today.

"Both the bodies were shifted to a hospital for autopsy. Whether it''s a case of homicide or suicide it will be known once after the post-mortem is conducted," Rajendranagar Division ACP M Sarveshwar Reddy told.

Meanwhile, police took Narasingh into custody and are further interrogating him.
