Why Radia’s charge rattles Pawar ????

suchithkc

Niira Radia's bombshell, that agriculture minister Sharad Pawar was possibly controlling D B Realty, has left many shaken not because it says anything particularly shocking, but because it could be the beginning of explosive testimonies being recorded in the spectrum investigations. (She isn't commenting on the charge officially, and her company is saying the transcripts are sub judice).
D B Realty is a controversial firm whose managing director Shahid Balwa is now in jail. Described by Forbes in 2010 as India's 50 richest man, Balwa was arrested in February for his alleged involvement in the 2G spectrum scandal through his company Swan Telecom. In just a few months, the corporate adulation had evaporated. He is now singing in custody, and could help the CBI nail some of India's most powerful businessmen and politicians.
It won't be easy for Pawar to shake off the stigma of being seen as the secret owner of a shadowy firm, but he has quickly denied Radia's allegation, and described her statement to the CBI as a "lie". By his own admission, he knows the Goenkas, who own the realty firm with Balwa, but that's about it.
D B Realty is allegedly involved in large-scale land scams in Mumbai, Pune, and Pimpri Chinchwad. Balwa also allegedly usurped land belonging to the Wakf Board, and faces many charges, including cheating.
Not much can happen in Maharashtra, many believe, without Pawar's approval. And the background, completely unrelated to Radia, could also prove uncomfortable for him: for one project, Balwa is said to have had on board Pawar's daughter Supriya Sule and her husband as promoters. That project, if the opposition is to be believed, is a Rs 15,000 crore swindle.
Radia has said people in business widely perceived Pawar as the man behind D B Realty, although she has also added that she had no evidence to back up the charge. Her statement may not be more than just a whisper in the grand spectrum saga, but it could still embarrass the cosily placed Pawar, and his helpless boss, prime minister Manmohan Singh and the UPA.
Former telecom minister A Raja, who caused a loss of Rs 1.7 lakh crore to the exchequer (by the reckoning of the government's own auditors), is behind bars. On Thursday, CNN-IBN accessed documents to show how many telecom companies, including those run by the Tatas and the Ambanis, made contributions to Tamil Maiyam, a cultural organisation linked to the DMK. That should add to the worries of Kanimozhi, Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi's daughter, who is closely associated with Tamil Maiyam.
