Sony says PlayStations released after seizure in patent fight

TOKYO

- Sony Corp said on Friday shipments of PlayStation 3 consoles that had been seized in the Netherlands in a patent dispute with LG Electronics had been released following a court hearing in the Hague.
The squabble over Blu-ray technology is just one of a long list of legal problems between the two Asian electronics giants that surfaced after a technology agreement between them expired three years ago.
Sony had appealed against the seizure of the PlayStation 3 in the Netherlands, a major point of entry for Sony's imports to Europe.
"At a court hearing in the Hague yesterday local time, Sony's arguments were accepted and the seizure order was lifted," said a spokesman for Sony in Tokyo. "We understand that there will now be no problem re-starting imports of the PlayStation 3 to Europe."
He said the ruling referred both to consoles being held at Dutch customs and at Sony's distribution centre. Sony has declined to specify how many units were seized, but has said there was no material effect on its European sales.
The lifting of the preliminary seizure order does not mean the row over Blu-ray is over, while Sony's complaints against LG include one filed to the U.S. International Trade Commission last year, seeking to block LG from shipping its Rumor Touch and several other smartphones to the United States.
