Chandigarh, Jan 24 :Congress president Sonia Gandhi Tuesday blamed the policies of the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) combine in Punjab for the state lagging behind in several areas.
Addressing rallies at Gurdaspur and Samrala (near Ludhiana) in support of Congress candidates for the Jan 30 elections to Punjab's 117 assembly seats, Gandhi said the Akali Dal-BJP government had even failed to benefit the state from the financial support extended by the central government through various projects, especially the national rural employment guarantee scheme.
"The Akali Dal-BJP government has pushed Punjab from the No.1 position to No.12 in the country. Punjab is under a debt of over Rs.65,000 crore and the state government has to take more loans to pay salaries to its employees," she said.
She alleged that the ruling alliance in Punjab promoted corruption and scams instead of development in the state.
