Sukumar Azhikode, passes away

Famous orator and veteran Malayalam scholar and Gandhian Sukumar Azhikode died early morning today at a private hospital at Thrissur. He suffered of cancer and was 85.
A former pro-vice-chancellor of Calicut University and ex-chairman of the National Book Trust, he was in the hospital from the first weeks of December.
Azhikode who was a towering presence of Kerala's cultural world, spoke about literature, philosophy, politics, governance and various aspects of life. His famous work 'Tatvamasi' (1984, Malayalam), an authoritative book on Indian Philosophy, Vedas and Upanishads has won 12 major  awards including Indian Sahitya Akademi Award, Kerala Sahithya Akademi Award, and Vayalar Awards.
He refused to accept the Padmashri conferred on him on 2007, stating that such honours were against the Constitution.
