New Delhi, Jan 25 : National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) Wednesday emphasised the need for strict monitoring of children's homes following revelations of sexual abuse of minor girls in an NGO run childrens' home in Gurgaon.
"The Gurgaon case is a grim reminder of the fact that children's homes need to be strictly monitored," NCPCR chairperson Shantha Sinha said in a statement.
"The NGO run home in Gurgaon was not registered under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act, 2000 and therefore, no inspection or monitoring by government agencies were done leaving children vulnerable to all kinds of abuses,'' she said.
A team comprising Gurgaon police and members of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), Shakti Vahini and the Gurgaon Child Protection Officer, among others, had conducted a raid on the NGO's premises in Maruti Kunj of Gurgaon last week. During the raid, 14 HIV-positive children, including 8 girls, were rescued.
The manager of the NGO, Ankur Gupta, had been accused of sexually abusing the children. He was arrested by the local police last week.
Sinha also emphasised the need for linking the homes to centers that can provide the vulnerable children with adequate medical facilities.
