Srinagar, Jan. 25: One of the most daring and novel militant bids to cross the Line of Control called for nerves of steel to thwart it ' Lieutenant Navdeep Singh, 26, proved he had what it takes on August 19 last year.
He gunned down the Pakistani militants who had tried to row acrossKishenganga, the river that acts as a de-facto border in the Gurez area of north Kashmir, in an encounter that lasted days and saved the life of a fellow soldier before laying down his own.
Navdeep, a third-generation soldier commissioned only five months earlier, has been posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, the highest peace-time award for gallantry.
"Honorary Captain (retired) Joginder Singh, his proud father, will receive the Ashok Chakra on Late Lieutenant Navdeep's behalf (tomorrow) with fierce pride and aplomb," a defence spokesperson said.
The foiled infiltration bid was compared to the 26/11 attack when militants reached Mumbai by boat.
