Sonia congratulates Jayalalithaa for clean sweep in Tamil Nadu polls

New Delhi/Chennai, May 15 : Congress President Sonia Gandhi had a telephonic conversation with All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) chief J. Jayalalithaa during which she congratulated her for her party's massive victory in the assembly polls.
According to television reports, the UPA chairperson also invited Jayalalithaa for tea.
Meanwhile, Jayalalithaa met Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala in Chennai today and staked her claim to form a new government in the state.
In the 234-member legislative assembly, the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) suffered a humiliating defeat, while Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK grabbed nearly 200 seats.
Jayalalithaa is expected to take oath as the new chief minister of the state on Monday.
DMK chief and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had on Friday submitted the resignation of his council of ministers to Governor Barnala following the verdict of the polls.
